Since the unanimous endorsement of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), various stakeholder groups – businesses, civil society, intergovernmental platforms – have been working on clarifying the practical implications of the ‘responsibility to respect human rights’ for financial institutions. At the same time, in their journey to sustainability, financial institutions are increasingly showing willingness to contribute to the achievement of global priorities such as the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. Human rights and social issues in finance: from global to regional solutions

The first UNEP FI meeting on human rights and social issues in Latin America and the Caribbean offered a platform for members in the region – Banco General, Banco Galicia, Suramericana and Itaú Unibanco – to share experiences on their approaches to respect human rights and act on their ability to further address social needs. Participants were also introduced to the Corporate Human Rights Benchmark (CHRB), that UNEP FI has teamed up to share the findings of the benchmark, released in 2017.  Finally, regional members and stakeholders were informed about UNEP FI strategic priorities on human rights and social issues for the upcoming years, and were encouraged to give feedback on available options to adapt these to regional needs.

Mainstreaming Social Impact Investing in Pension Funds in South Korea

Making Financial Institutions more Resilient to Environmental Risks: Launch of Drought Stress Testing Tool

In a pilot project on Environmental Stress Testing, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the Natural Capital Finance Alliance (NCFA), have developed an analytical framework and tool that allows banks to quantify and assess the potential impact of drought events on the performance of their corporate loan portfolio. The project has been funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The tool will be launched at a series of events: 7th March in Mexico City, 10th March in Sao Paulo, Brazil, 14th March in Beijing, China, 17th March in New York, USA and 5th April in London, UK.

This initiative is backed by the experience of PSI members in implementing environmental, social and governance (ESG) risk management frameworks in their core business activities, and by the PSI’s global study, led by Munich Re and the International Finance Corporation, on how ESG risks are addressed when underwriting surety bonds for infrastructure projects. These initiatives are shining examples of how the insurance industry can support the SDGs and will be developed further by the PSI in 2017.

Introductory Training Workshop on Environmental and Social Risk Analysis in the Housing and Construction Sector

In Peru, as well as in other Latin American countries, the regulatory framework on environmental issues is advancing rapidly, posing increasingly demanding challenges, which will guide and encourage the implementation of appropriate environmental and social management of the various economic stakeholders, especially financial institutions that aim at taking the lead on financial issues related to the environment. Since January 2016, a new regulatory framework requires Peruvian banks to perform social and environmental risk assessments. UNEP FI/Ecobanking conducted in Peru an Introductory Environmental and Social Risk Analysis training workshop. The event was organised in collaboration with the Finance Mechanisms for Low Carbon Development Project (FinanCC), which is implemented by GIZ Peru, and Fondo Mivivienda .
